Real Madrid's opening stages were all about long shots, but a lack in focus allowed Cadiz to hit the post as Alfonso Espino drove across the box and beat Thibaut Courtois but was unable to direct the ball inside the goal.

Asensio's volleyed effort appeared headed for the goal down the other end, and Gil was forced to make a quick stop.

Soon after, after the striker had used some really fantastic one-two passing to get into the area and was deserving of its own highlight reel, Gil had to make a save from Karim Benzema.

Rodrygo's crazy run found Dani Ceballos in the box, causing Real to be disappointed once more late in the half. The discus bounced.

Rodrygo was let through on goal by some more deft footwork, but his shot lacked true precision and was directed right at the appreciative and all-around wonderful Gil.

The game's next significant opportunity fell to Rodrygo when Federico Valverde's cut-back placed him in the six-yard box. However, the Brazilian was unable to capitalise on the opportunity due to a desperate lunging challenge.

Fans were puzzled as to why Real had not scored at the hour mark and instead observed as Benzema once more hit the woodwork.

To defeat Gil, you were always going to need something unique, and that power did originate from the unlikeliest of places. Just minutes after his brother Alex replaced the opponents, Nacho, of all persons, fizzed a shot from the edge of the box that arrowed perfectly into the bottom corner.

Cadiz made a few more offensive moves in the closing 15 minutes, but this effort simply gave Real more possibilities to score. Real looked threatening on the break, but they were unable to add a third goal before the final horn.

GK: Thibaut Courtois - 6/10 - Not really put to the test, but he took advantage of the opportunities to show off his better passing.

RB: Lucas Vazquez (5/10)—If his aggressive play is any indication, he may have forgotten that he is a winger.

Eder Militao, CB, scored a 7 out of 10 for his truly exceptional passing from the back to try to compel his attackers to produce something.

CB: Antonio Rudiger (6/10) - Didn't hesitate to challenge Guardiola to a duel.

LB Nacho Fernandez earned a 7/10 because he had nothing to do in terms of defence and was forced to participate in attack. His strike was quite impressive, yet it wasn't very convincing.

DM: Aurelien Tchouameni - 7/10 - Appeared to move a little more slowly than those around him, but he improved significantly after the break.

Federico Valverde received a score of 6/10.

RW: Marco Asensio (grade: 8/10) - Marco Asensio put in a strong performance on the right wing and added the final touch with a wonderful goal.

ST: 8/10 for Karim Benzema Excellent linking and movement. Definitely deserved two or three goals.

LW: Rodrygo, who received an 8/10. There could be a Rodrygo. Amazingly impressive. I don't know how he failed to win.
